When you want to mention a person in your toot, and would already do it in the private dm to the bot account, the persion mentioned would also get the DM you send to the bot, because that's how direct messages on Mastodon works.

We could add a feature that translates a given special character into a mention in the final toot.

So writing a DM with Hello %fleaz@chaos.social would turn into Hello @fleaz@chaos.social in the final toot.
